One thing I hear that holds people back from keeping houseplants or trying container gardening is the worry that their plants will need frequent repotting—making them feel like a lot of work. Well, I have good news: there are actually plants out there that genuinely like being root bound!
In my experience, it's generally best to keep cacti and other succulent plants slightly underpotted—it really helps guard against rot. African violets (shown) and their cousin cape primrose do beautifully when kept root bound, and I've found the same goes for peace lilies, sansevieria, spider plants, and ficus like the fiddle-leaf fig. Honestly, spider plants and sansevieria can keep on thriving even when their steel-like roots start cracking the container they're in—nature is wild!
